El faro del Fangar

The Fangar lighthouse

History of the Lighthouse

The first lighthouse at Fangar Point was built in 1864 and had two lighthouse keepers dedicated to its maintenance. That was the first year in which sailors crossing Mediterranean waters could delimit the exact location of this peninsula.
Very often, the lighthouse was flooded by the sea, as if it were floating in the Mediterranean waters. In 1929, its operation was automated, eliminating the need for lighthouse keepers to illuminate the sea, since the lighthouse performed that function on its own. During the Spanish Civil War, the lighthouse burned and in 1956 it was restored and reinforced. However, it was not until the end of 1972 that it was replaced by the current lighthouse.

How to Get to the Lighthouse

The lighthouse, 20 meters high, is located at the tip of Fangar, a sandy peninsula of about 400 hectares. As a curiosity, the video clip for the song "Vértigo" by the group U2 and the movie "Sahara" starring Penélope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey were filmed at the tip of Fangar.

To get to the lighthouse, you must leave your car in the parking lot on Marquesa beach, in front of the Vascos restaurant. After the walk to the lighthouse, you can enjoy a good rice and a refreshing Segadors del Delta rice cream liqueur, which you will surely have earned.

It is approximately an hour's walk to the lighthouse. It is reached along the beach and cannot be accessed by vehicle or other transportation through the middle of the dunes, since La Marquesa beach and Punta del Fangar are protected areas. Some sections are closed, so you will have to walk through the water. Throughout this walk, you will be able to contemplate the wonderful sand dunes, considered the best preserved on the Catalan coast and delimited by the Ebro Delta Natural Park as a protected area for nesting birds. It should be noted that Segadors del Delta donates 1% of the profits from its products to the Ebro Delta Natural Park.

Enjoy the Camino and the Lighthouse

During the tour, you will be able to enjoy the extensive beach, where you will be able to cool off and gain strength to continue the route to the lighthouse. If you are lucky with the day, you will be able to observe mirages and see the lighthouse reflected on the ground, a true pleasure for the eyes that will allow you to reconnect with yourself and with nature.

Once you arrive at the lighthouse, we give you some advice: open your eyes wide and contemplate. Make a 360º turn around yourself and enjoy the wonderful spectacle that nature offers us.

From there, you can see the Fangar in its entirety and, beyond, the towns of Camarles, L'Ampolla and L'Ametlla de Mar. You can also see the port and the entire bay, where the horizon mixes with the sea and heaven.
